Buying a Smoker
There are so many cooking methods but nothing can replicate the authentic taste of smoked meat using charcoal or wood. You can indeed cook smoked meats using an all-purpose charcoal grill or the gas grill, overall utilizing what we currently have but, if you want the best result, there is no way to avoid using the proper smoker. If you enjoy pulled pork and other smoked meats often, it is wise to have the equipment ready to use, moreover if you also often invite people to the cookout.
The first thing you want to consider when buying anything is the price because not everyone can spend the same amount. In general you can find smokers at a wide range of price starting from $100 for the simple charcoal all-purpose grill to the versatile all-in-one solution that can cost $10,000 especially those with large capacities. We recommend spending around $500 or $600 for a good pellet smoker that comes with features and has a decent cooking area to match with the amount you want to cook at once.
When it comes to cooking, especially those that require low heat such as smoking, the temperature is probably the most important point to pay attention to. Make sure to find the smoker that is designed to be easy to use when adjusting or maintaining the temperature. Many of them come with built-in thermometers and they can be reliable too when monitoring the temperature inside the cooking area but you can always add more equipment such as probes for a much better accuracy.
You also have to decide the type of smoker to buy since based on the fuel they may also taste different. We can’t say which is the best and most delicious but either charcoal or wood pellet smokers are usually what most people prefer for low temperature cooking like smoking. If you are aiming for a contest and winning them, wood and charcoal are also the best options to consider. But, some places like South Carolina also allow gas and electric options to be used.
In addition, it is about the overall build quality because the equipment is meant to sustain heat and for cooking at long hours depending on what you are making. The construction, workmanship, and durability are qualities to consider. Make sure your product is well made and will sustain the use over time since smokers are not cheap. If the equipment is stored outdoors, you will want to add cover too because the weather can damage the material and electronic component over time.

About Z Grills and Traeger
Now when you already decide which smoker to buy, it is time to see what the market has to offer because there are quite a lot to choose from. We do recommend narrowing down based on the budget, capacity, and the fuel type first to ease the shopping process. We can also shop based on the brand that you trust the most because many popular names are very reliable while offering a wide range of options based on the features that you want.
Some of the most reliable options are Z Grills and Traeger which are among the best wood smokers that you can opt for. These grills and smoker brands are well-known for their amazing product quality and at a competitive price point. There are also various sizing to choose from and our favorite is they always offer some features to ease the job. Smoking is not the most convenient cooking process due to the low temperature and time to properly cook the food so these features are always welcomed.
The models we want to talk about today are the modest ZPG-450A and the Pro Series 22 from both Z Grills and Traeger respectively. The two are decently sized for a standard family and are very easy to use. We do think even novice users can get used to cooking amazing smoked meat with them. Price wise they are also on the mid-range and should be ideal for people who often do cook out or want to try mastering the cooking method.
In comparison both smokers from Z Grills and Traeger are very similar to each other based on what they can offer such as the build quality and features. These wood pellet grills are convenient and durable with temperature control so we can just set the smoker to a certain cooking temperature and forget about it until filling the pellet again or checking the food from time to time. But, if you want the more affordable choice, Z Grills is currently cheaper than the Traeger with similar capacity and the same features.
Z Grills and Traeger Unit
Just like most grills or smokers, these two are coming in parts that require some assembly. The material seems to be made of durable steel but it takes quite the time to put them together. The main parts are all attached easily but you may need a little help so it can be done faster. The manual is very helpful but sometimes we also find a confusing instruction yet overall both smokers are pretty compact for the capacity and should fit easily in most spaces.
As you can see these Z Grills and Traeger smokers are pretty much the same design wise with the main cooking area covered in a steel dome and a vent on one side of the smoker. On the opposite is where you find a box where the pellet will go in and here is also the control panel for the smoker. They are featured with two wheels for transporting purposes but they are not swiveling. Read also: Z Grills Vs Pit Boss here.
Z Grills and Traeger Capacity
When choosing a grill, smoker, or any cooking appliance, we recommend to consider the size or capacity first. The model we have today is the smaller option but can definitely smoke a rib with some sausages or beef patties if you want to. The 450A from Z Grills for example comes with a total cooking area of 450 square inch while the main cooking grate is measured at 21 x 15.5 inches. On the other hand Pro Series 22 is coming with a total cooking area of 572 square inches.
When the warming rack is not used, the cooking area itself is already 418 square inches to fit a variety of ingredients. The two are strictly pellet smokers so it is only made for wood pellets which each of their hoppers can take 15 and 18 pounds respectively. In general the time to empty this amount of pellet depends on the cooking temperature but usually it can last for about 10 hours at low settings.
Z Grills and Traeger Features
Next is for the features that you can get from these Z Grills and Traeger smokers. The most convenient feature will be their adjustable temperature range which is very easy to use or almost like when cooking with an oven. This temperature knob on both smokers is adjustable up to 450 degree Fahrenheit, perfect for slow cooking but not as hot as charcoal variants. In addition the Traeger Pro Series offers two meat probes as well to monitor the temperature more accurately.
There is no probe in Z Grills but you can buy and use separate probes to enjoy the same benefit. Both are cooked with indirect heat and to make sure the smoker is easy to clean, there is a panel below the grate to evaporate and collect the liquid from meats and other ingredients. You can add warming racks on both smokers to increase the cooking capacity.
Z Grills and Traeger Performance
Lastly for the performance, both Z Grills and Traeger smokers are amazing, especially about how easy it is to cook with them. The temperature control is easy to use but in comparison the Traeger seems to hold into the preset temperature better than Z Grills or more accurately. The Z Grills can go very hot when cooking but the temperature fluctuates quite away from the preset one such as if you set it at 250, the temperature will be ranging from 200 to 300 degree.
Z Grills Vs Traeger
Both of these Z Grills and Traeger smokers are some of the best to go for, especially for casual and enthusiasts who want to cook the meat at home. They are very easy to use but specific for the model we are talking about here, the Traeger is more expensive, has a wider cooking space, comes with two meat probes, and is also better at maintaining the temperature. For the ease of use we do think the two smokers are very convenient and user friendly.
There is no bad option here and you can go with any smoker that seems to work and match the preference well but, if you don’t have an issue with the budget, we will recommend Traeger smoker such as this Pro Series 22 which is very reliable and easy to use as well as coming with more cooking capacity.
